Microplastics: An Invisible Threat to Our Planet and Health
Plastic, hailed as one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, has brought enormous convenience to human life. Yet it has gradually become a heavy burden on the Earth’s ecological environment. Today, an even more insidious and potentially more hazardous form of plastic — microplastics — is quietly and pervasively infiltrating every corner of our daily lives.
What Are Microplastics?
The term “microplastics” was first coined by scientists at the University of Plymouth, UK, in 2004. It generally refers to plastic fragments, fibres, films and particles smaller than 5 millimetres in diameter. Today, instrument‑detectable plastic particles of micrometre and even nanometre sizes are also categorized as microplastics. They fall into two main source categories. One is secondary microplastics: small debris formed when plastic waste breaks down in the environment through physical, chemical and biological degradation. The other is primary microplastics: plastic particles manufactured at ≤5 mm from the outset, such as plastic microbeads intentionally added to cosmetics, toothpaste, detergents and other consumer goods.

Our ordinary‑looking daily diet may conceal large quantities of microplastics. Bottled water is meant to be a convenient drinking‑water source, yet a 2024 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) delivered alarming findings: an average 1‑litre bottle of bottled water contains roughly 240 000 plastic microparticles, and concentrations rise further after exposure to high‑temperature sunlight. Beyond bottled water, seafood is also contaminated. Many aquatic organisms cannot distinguish microplastics from food while feeding, causing microplastics to bioaccumulate inside their bodies. Oysters, for instance, filter seawater for nourishment and readily take in microplastics alongside it; eating 100 grams of oysters may expose consumers to about 70 microplastic particles. Even table salt, a staple of human diets, is affected. Research shows microplastic particles are present in 94 % of commercial salt products, and humans may ingest hundreds of types of microplastics each year via salt consumption.
Inhalation: Hazards in the Air
Indoor spaces are by no means microplastic‑free zones. Indoor air may hold up to 528 microplastic particles per cubic metre, while vehicle interiors can reach concentrations as high as 2 238 particles per cubic metre. People inhale large amounts of microplastics without noticing. Micro‑fibres shed from clothing, carpets and interior decorations float in the air and enter the human body through respiration.
Hidden Risks in Daily Routines
Apart from ingestion and inhalation, trivial‑seeming everyday activities create pathways for microplastics to invade our bodies. Chewing gum, a popular snack, was examined in a March 2025 University of California study. A single piece of gum releases tens of thousands of microplastic particles; most are shed within the first two minutes of chewing, and 94 % are released after eight minutes of mastication. Disposable paper cups release over 25 000 microplastic particles into hot beverages within roughly 15 minutes of contact. Tea bags made of Nylon 66 or PET polyester release 11.6 billion micrometre‑sized plastic particles and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles when steeped in 95 °C hot water for five minutes. Household cleaning sponges release 6.5 million microplastics for every gram of material worn away.
What Harm Do Microplastics Cause Once Inside the Human Body?
Scientists are progressively uncovering health risks as microplastics enter human bodies through multiple routes. Studies confirm microplastics accumulate in numerous human organs and tissues, including the brain, heart, lungs, intestines, liver and even bone marrow. A January 2025 report in Science Advances demonstrated that microplastic particles are engulfed by immune cells, travel through the bloodstream and eventually lodge in cerebral blood vessels, potentially triggering vascular blockages, cerebral thrombosis and neuro‑behavioural abnormalities . A 2024 study in The New England Journal of Medicine revealed that micro‑ and nanoplastics infiltrate carotid artery tissue, raising risks of heart disease, stroke and death. Subjects with detectable plastic particles faced a 4.53‑fold higher risk of developing related illnesses or dying over the subsequent 34‑month follow‑up period. Another 2024 paper in the Journal of Hazardous Materials identified microplastics in the bone marrow of all participating test subjects. A 2022 study in Science of the Total Environment found microplastics in lung tissue samples taken from 11 surgical patients. Researchers from Peking University Third Hospital reported in 2024 that the endometrium of infertile women is contaminated with diverse microplastics. Multiple research projects indicate microplastic exposure may impair human reproductive, digestive and respiratory health, and correlate with the onset of colon and lung cancers.
Take Action to Mitigate Microplastic Threats
Faced with the pervasive invasion of microplastics, we cannot remain passive. Every individual can help curb microplastic generation and intake through small daily adjustments. In terms of diet: avoid single‑use plastic items, especially those used for hot food and hot drinks; drink boiled tap water rather than bottled water wherever possible; opt for food sold without plastic packaging or products packed in glass, paper or metal. For clothing, prioritise garments made from natural fibres such as cotton, linen and silk, and limit purchases of synthetic‑fabric clothing, as synthetic textiles shed vast numbers of micro‑plastic fibres during washing. For cleaning supplies, choose non‑plastic cleaning tools and cut down on easily‑degrading plastic sponges and similar products.
The hazards of microplastics cannot be ignored. Acting as invisible silent killers, they endanger both human health and planetary ecosystems. Let us take action, reduce plastic consumption starting with ourselves, and collectively safeguard human wellbeing and our precious Earth.
